Laid off to senior DevOps (home lab did it)

You keep hitting the same wall. Every DevOps role you want asks for five to eight years of experience you have not been given the chance to earn, and another month of tutorials has not closed the gap.

So I recorded a conversation with Erick, one of our members, who was stuck in that exact spot and clawed his way into a senior DevOps role.

Before this, his hands-on experience was a free AWS account and a stack of tutorials that never quite turned into anything. YAML files looked scary to him and Kubernetes manifests read like a foreign language.

Then he built a home lab. Here is where that took him:

  • He landed a senior DevOps role, past listings that wanted five to eight years of experience.
  • He went from YAML looking scary to moving an app through Docker into Kubernetes and explaining it under pressure.
  • His home lab gave him the hands-on experience the listings demanded, without a single year on the job.
  • He handles SOC and PCI compliance work and automates the systems his team depends on.
  • His next build is a self-hosted AI home lab, running n8n and his own agents on Kubernetes.

There is a moment where he describes the interviewer's face changing the second the home lab comes up. What the interviewer said next is the part you want to hear from him, not from me.

Watch it and you will see exactly how someone who started where you are cleared the experience wall.

P.S. Erick did not get past that wall by watching more tutorials; he built a real home lab, the kind that makes an interviewer forget you are junior. That home lab, and the job it opens, is what we build together inside KubeCraft. If you are tired of being filtered out for experience you have not been allowed to get, apply here.
