“I've been doing this too long to start over now." “I don’t want to take a pay cut” “I have too much to learn” Right. If you’re reading this you are at least aware of DevOps, and you’re ahead of where Kevin was about two years ago. Earlier this month he signed with Deutsche Bank as a Site Reliability Engineer and a $20k raise. Let me back up. Most DevOps engineers come from similar backgrounds. Software Engineer, IT, Helpdesk, etc. Kevin did not. He spent 20 years in semiconductors flying around Europe and Asia fixing other peoples equipment. It’s a great job but zero to do with DevOps. When his factory announced it was closing, he took a career quiz and his top match was DevOps Engineer. So he typed “DevOps” into youtube and came across a video of mine. He didn't know Linux and had never heard of a homelab. Kevin joined KubeCraft and followed the same system over 1,000 other members have followed. Then he ordered a raspberry pi and spent his nights and weekends building out his homelab based on the things he learned inside. In 4 months he finished his certs to become a Kubestronaut. In that time he followed Kubecraft’s Job MagnetOS to make sure the right people could see what he'd built. Not long after, a recruiter reached out. His interviews were booked for 45 minutes. Both ran an hour and a half, because he shared his screen and walked them through the homelab he'd built. The homelab gave him proof he could build and something real to drive the conversation. Remember those three things from the top? "I've been doing this too long to start over now." Kevin had 20 years in a completely different industry. "I don't want to take a pay cut." The posting said junior. He asked for the top of the range anyway, and they said yes. He's now making $20K more than he did after 20 years in his old career. "I have too much to learn." He started with zero about two years ago. He could've used any of those reasons to avoid the change. Instead, he got to work on his homelab. KubeCraft gave him the system, the projects, the coaching calls and a community to lean on. He did the work, but he knew what work to do because of the proven system. In his words: "The system's there, but you gotta do it." Mischa P.S. The Winter Sprint starts Friday Nov 6: 60 days inside KubeCraft to build your homelab, ship your projects and be ready for the January hiring wave. 45 people are locked in. If you want to be the next Kevin, book a call here and we'll map out your 60 days. |
